When I was a kid, I didn't think very much about my family's history. I just vaguely knew that we were part German (arrived in 1727), part Brit (arrived mid-1600s), and part Irish (1840s). When the Vietnam War started up, I volunteered for the Marines and spent 15 months in combat and while I was there, I discovered that I had the abilities and the instincts that I needed to succeed and survive.
Now, thanks to this excellent discussion, I understand better where I got these abilities.
Well thanks - but your history is off a bit: the Vietnam War was initiated by the Communists, as the North Vietnamese and their proxies, the Viet Cong in the south began to take over, using terrorist raids against the South Vietnamese people. JFK and LBJ were the presidents who initiated the direct American involvement and given the Cold War going on, with direct Soviet and Chinese involvement and the strategic location of Vietnam, it made sense.
Those of us who fought there saw what the enemy did to the people there and it became really clear who the "bad guys" were and that we were needed. I am proud of us who served back then.
I suspect that I know more about the history of the French Indochina war that you do - I had read all of Bernard Fall's books before I even signed up for the Corps. The French fought to keep their colony. We fought to protect a free people, to stop the ground invasion by the Communist forces, backed by all of the Warsaw Pact and China.
We didn't fight to gain a colony, or steal their resources, or make them our 51st through 53rd states, We fought for them.

Appreciate that - but it wasn't "useless": for ten years we kept the communists from overcoming the South Vietnamese and even though we ended up deserting the South Vietnamese (thank you, Democrats), we gave the rest of the region enough breathing space that they were able avoid the Communist takeover of the area - and there wasn't enough left of the North Vietnamese Army to move on their neighbors.

If the Brits and other Europeans had any wits about them at all, they would never have let things get anywhere near this point; the EU would by now be dissolved and its leaders would either be in prison or gone entirely. Apparently you haven't delved into the reasons WHY these 'so-called' invaders in the 20th and 21st centuries- have landed on your shores. Economic opportunities (if only imagined) are the drivers. Judaism and Christianity are not compatible faiths; they have opposite teachings about the divinity of Jesus, the existence of an afterlife, the need to observe complicated purity rules and dietary restrictions, to name a few. Christians who idolize Jews and Israel, usually because they associate them with the second coming, seem confused to me.

When I was a kid, I didn't think very much about my family's history. I just vaguely knew that we were part German (arrived in 1727), part Brit (arrived mid-1600s), and part Irish (1840s). When the Vietnam War started up, I volunteered for the Marines and spent 15 months in combat and while I was there, I discovered that I had the abilities and the instincts that I needed to succeed and survive.
Now, thanks to this excellent discussion, I understand better where I got these abilities.

Well thanks - but your history is off a bit: the Vietnam War was initiated by the Communists, as the North Vietnamese and their proxies, the Viet Cong in the south began to take over, using terrorist raids against the South Vietnamese people. JFK and LBJ were the presidents who initiated the direct American involvement and given the Cold War going on, with direct Soviet and Chinese involvement and the strategic location of Vietnam, it made sense.
Those of us who fought there saw what the enemy did to the people there and it became really clear who the "bad guys" were and that we were needed. I am proud of us who served back then.
Go back and read up on France's military involvement in "Indochina", and how French leaders passed the buck to willing American members of the MIC.
I suspect that I know more about the history of the French Indochina war that you do - I had read all of Bernard Fall's books before I even signed up for the Corps. The French fought to keep their colony. We fought to protect a free people, to stop the ground invasion by the Communist forces, backed by all of the Warsaw Pact and China.
We didn't fight to gain a colony, or steal their resources, or make them our 51st through 53rd states, We fought for them.

Appreciate that - but it wasn't "useless": for ten years we kept the communists from overcoming the South Vietnamese and even though we ended up deserting the South Vietnamese (thank you, Democrats), we gave the rest of the region enough breathing space that they were able avoid the Communist takeover of the area - and there wasn't enough left of the North Vietnamese Army to move on their neighbors.
Both me and my younger brother were severely wounded over there, and we both lost many friends. We paid that price because the South Vietnamese were worth defending.

I descend from Scots martyrs—warriors all—on both sides of my family. The Ross clan from the Highlands and the McLaughlins from the Lowlands along the border with England. My Ross ancestors, father and son, were captured on the battlefield and transported to Massachusetts enslaved as indentured “servants” in the 1650s. They survived the trip, 30 years of slavery before freed and began families of 10-12 children to populate the Northeast. I have my roots in northern England and some Viking blood in the mix. My ancestors came to America in the late 1700s for a chance to own land and be free. That they did. They were stong willed and never gave up. They fought in every war and conflict. They had large families and spread out all over the country. I'm proud of my heritage and even though I'm 70 now I will fight for freedom as best I can. I'm probably more dangerous now because I have lived my life and I'm not afraid to die fighting for my country. I learned a lot about that in the Marines.
