Kari Lake is impressive and there are many others. But I am not sure about Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party of Canada. Pierre's attack on German MEP Christine Anderson who is a voice of truth and sanity in a world gone mad has raised major questions regarding what he actually stands for. My wife and I spent 20 days with the Freedom Convoy on Parliament Hill during a very cold January-February in 2022 and there was nary a Conservative MP in sight. In fact, they were conspicuous by their absence along with Senators from that upper house of "sober reflections" who were also missing in action. When Canada needed courage on the part of their elected representatives, there was none to be found which is a measure of the values and character of the people we elect. With friends like these, who needs enemies? But what we did encounter were friendly, affectionate and upbeat people with smiling faces not covered by harmful masks. The people protesting against mandates, health protocols and Trudeau tyranny were from different walks of life including trucking, small businesses, doctors, nurses and medical researchers, veterans and ex-members of police agencies including the RCMP. There were daily lectures by Brian Peckford, courageous doctors and nurses, medical researchers such as Robert Malone, organizers of the Freedom Convoy, etc. given on the flatbed of a truck parked in the middle of Wellington Street across from the House of Commons. This was true freedom and democracy in action. As we trudged home to the Glebe, we entered a darker world of mostly faceless masked people with fear in their eyes. I kept thinking walking home each day of Solzhenitsyn's moving story of life in the Gulags for Ivan Denisovich (One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich) and wondered is this what Canada has become?
