It is not for everyone, and I certainly do not recommend it, but an in-depth study of the history of Rome's rise and empire, which I have undertaken, is utterly fascinating. It is fascinating because this acts as a light illuminating our day and dawning age. Rome established the gestalt and most of the practices of governance and religion we in the so-called West take as gospel without critical analysis. Scholars are nitpickers, and thank goodness. They put a spotlight and a microscope on words, events, people, etc., and sometimes this helps see the elephant in the room. And boy, is there an elephant. The elephant is Leviathan, the state. The larger Rome grew, the more the ills we are now identifying in our own Western gestalt became. The more numerous and severe the ills that plagued Rome and its empire, the more strident and forceful the establishment became. And, as we are increasingly seeing, the more frequently the powerful go after each other. Buckle up, the ride is already bumpy, and as far as I can tell, the West is seeking a great big cathartic bowel release, and it will be awesome, as seen later. But for you and me, not so much fun.

An excellent and unhappy comparison, depending where one lives! I lived in Costa Rica for 35 years and it's my experience that Latinos are natural Libertarians and rebels against authority.
Canadians on the other hand, have more in common with soft and compliant West Europeans and lack the wisdom and cojones to bite the bullet and do what's needed. Maybe because they haven't hit rock bottom yet!
