I was born and raised in Montreal before migrating to the US as a teen. I always had warm memories of the city and would visit/vacation annually since. It pains me to see the decline over the years. This past March I had reason to visit for a few days and it hit me hard how Montreal now resembles NYC of the 70s and early 80s. The graffiti on every building, the homelessness, the crime. Then the cherry on top of the weekend was when my car got stolen on the last day. Sorry to say that my memories of this once great city are permanently ruined.

I live in a university town, "Upper" South. About 10 yrs ago a mosque was built on several acres of what used to be farmland, right up against a fairly new Baptist church. Not causing any problems that I've heard of, except at first trying to put in a cemetery without filing correct paperwork. You see the women shopping in groups at Walmart etc. with the tightly wrapped head scarves, but they don't resemble Somalis. Yesterday, as I was heading to pick up some items at Walmart, I took the long way there, past the mosque and what I saw was an overflowing parking lot, hundreds of cars, with cars coming in off the main road at a great rate of speed as if the drivers were late for some sort of meeting. It was c. 2 pm. Wonder if there was some sort of strategic gathering re: Somali fraud in other parts of the country?

I've been trying to think up a "waker-up" that those(and many more) that would work on these idiots, and am struggling with keeping it in the bounds of civility and wisdom. Wide open to any suggestions but I have to say I'm pretty sold that they are just bought off and you can't fix that, there's no soul left to deal logically with. I am end of the Silent Generation....I was an adult during the femlib movement of the 60/70s....I can affirm that that was one of the worst movements in this country. For those female judges in their 50s, they are the first generation born to the femlibbers, a movement with noble initial goals which were highjacked by radicals who had another goal which was the feminization of men. Added to that movement was the creation of CPS when child abuse came out of the closet. CPS was manned by the worst of people who saw child abuse everywhere. What it did was put the parents, now called boomers, into a bad situation: They became afraid to discipline their children and we deal with the results. Doctor Spock did his share of damage in raising children....they grew up knowing their "rights" and with no personal discipline.

I was born and raised in Montreal before migrating to the US as a teen. I always had warm memories of the city and would visit/vacation annually since. It pains me to see the decline over the years. This past March I had reason to visit for a few days and it hit me hard how Montreal now resembles NYC of the 70s and early 80s. The graffiti on every building, the homelessness, the crime. Then the cherry on top of the weekend was when my car got stolen on the last day. Sorry to say that my memories of this once great city are permanently ruined.
MS, that is a very sad story. I was born and lived in Plattsburgh fifties and mid sixties. Montreal was less than an hour away. It was this marvelous place. Later in life I would like you return for business. By early 2000’s the change was just too depressing to bear. Maybe in the fullness of time Quebec will sort itself and Canada will help Montreal come back to that amazing pace we got the good luck to experince.
Find me any city in North American that hasnt declined to some degree over the past 50 years or in Europe..its pretty universal. Montreal is still quite safe and tons to do. The nationalist policies of the ruling class has not helped..and their has and is been rampant corruption in the city. Even Burlington Vermont which was always a charming quiet city is full of drug addicts now downtown. Dont think this is the immigrants fault..this is bad and corrupt leaders, bad policies, etc.

I live in a university town, "Upper" South. About 10 yrs ago a mosque was built on several acres of what used to be farmland, right up against a fairly new Baptist church. Not causing any problems that I've heard of, except at first trying to put in a cemetery without filing correct paperwork. You see the women shopping in groups at Walmart etc. with the tightly wrapped head scarves, but they don't resemble Somalis. Yesterday, as I was heading to pick up some items at Walmart, I took the long way there, past the mosque and what I saw was an overflowing parking lot, hundreds of cars, with cars coming in off the main road at a great rate of speed as if the drivers were late for some sort of meeting. It was c. 2 pm. Wonder if there was some sort of strategic gathering re: Somali fraud in other parts of the country?
I think Friday is a holy day or something along those lines for Muslims. When I had school children, I was asked to fill in for a muslim woman at our children’s school event because she had to be at the mosque for an important reason every Friday. I never got a thank you for my effort though!!!
